Madrona, Seattle, King County, Washington
Madrona is an east Seattle neighborhood that is largely residential. John Ayer, who donated the property for Madrona Park, named the neighborhood after a species of tree (Arbutus) native to the area. Madrona’s motto, “The Peaceable Kingdom,” represents the city’s multiracial background. The coal mining sector brought Chinese immigrants to Madrona in the early twentieth century. Later, the shipbuilding boom resulted in a large migration of African Americans.
