Burien, King County, Washington
Burien is a King County suburb located south of Seattle on Puget Sound. Burien’s population was 52,066 as of the 2020 census, a 56.3% growth since incorporation in 1993. An annexation in 2010 greatly increased the city’s population. According to a popular local legend, an early settler called Mike Kelly gave the city its initial name after emerging from the trees and saying, “This is certainly a sunny dale.” Even today, a few long-term residents still refer to the Burien neighborhood as Sunnydale.
