Des Moines is located near the core of the Seattle metropolitan region on the east bank of Puget Sound. It is bounded to the south by Federal Way, to the east by Kent, to the northeast by SeaTac, to the north by Burien, and to the northwest by Normandy Park. Des Moines is one of the few spots along this seashore where the geography allows for easy access to the water, and the city operates a recreational marina with moorage, boat launching, and pier fishing facilities. The most popular state park on the Sound is forested Saltwater State Park, located on a steep ravine between the Zenith and Woodmont communities.
